A viewer watching your YouTube ad asks which size to order, and gets an answer without leaving YouTube. Nobody on your team wrote that answer. Google's AI did, from the product details you gave Google. The ad can answer the question your product page used to, but it can't take the order yet, and Google hasn't said where you'll see what it told the viewer.
What changed, and who it applies to. Google is testing Business Agent, its AI shopping assistant, inside YouTube ads. It is a beta for US retailers, by sign-up form, and applying doesn't guarantee a place. Google announced it on September 16, 2026, and repeated it in its September Demand Gen Drop on September 24 (our roundup of the whole Drop covers the other changes). Below are 7 checks, in the same order as our carousel. Where the reasoning is ours, it says "Our read".

1. A chat box next to your video ad
Date and source: September 16, 2026. Google's holiday shopping post, and the beta sign-up form.
What we know. Business Agent can add a chat next to your YouTube in-stream ad. In Google's words: “Once an eligible retailer signs up, Business Agent embeds directly within YouTube ads, allowing viewers to conduct self-driven research, ask complex product questions, and receive tailored guidance without leaving their YouTube context.” The sign-up form lists the kinds of questions: “product specs, recommendations, shipping info, etc.”
What it means for you. Our read: the ad can now answer what your product page used to. A viewer who wanted to know about fit or delivery no longer has to click through to find out.
Try this. List the 5 questions your customers ask most before they buy.
2. Not every account gets in
Date and source: September 2026. Google's beta sign-up form.
What we know. The form sets the bar: “Eligibility: Having an active Demand Gen campaign linked to Google Merchant Center Feeds (DG-GMC) with min $10/day”. It runs in the US and in English, on phones, in in-stream video ads: “Format: Mobile in-stream only. No shorts for now” and “Geo & Language: US only, English only”. Applying is not a guarantee: “Participation isn’t guaranteed, but submitting this form confirms you agree to participate.”
What it means for you. Our read: if you don't sell products through a Demand Gen campaign today, you can't join yet. Demand Gen is a Google Ads campaign type for image and video ads, including on YouTube and Gmail, and Merchant Center is where your product feed lives.
Try this. Check that Merchant Center is linked to your Demand Gen campaign.
3. Your feed is the script
Date and source: 2026. Google's help page for Business Agent on Search, and the beta form.
What we know. Business Agent started on Google Search in January 2026. Google's help page for it opens: “Business Agent is a conversational experience on Google Search that allows shoppers to chat with your brand.” On Search, it also uses your website: “Business Agent uses information from your company’s website, which allows this virtual assistant to provide more helpful answers in addition to your shopping data in Merchant Center.” For YouTube ads, the beta requires a linked Merchant Center feed, and neither the form nor the Drop mentions your website. Google hasn't said whether the YouTube version also reads your website.
What it means for you. Our read: your product titles, sizes and shipping times now do the talking. Whatever your feed says is what a viewer can be told.
Try this. Read your top 20 listings in Merchant Center as a shopper would, and fix sizes and ship times.
4. Write the answers into your feed
Date and source: September 16, 2026. Google's holiday shopping post.
What we know. Google suggests adding conversational attributes to your product feed, extra details that add context to your listings. Its own words: “submitting conversational attributes to add richer context to your product listings. During testing with lululemon, conversational attributes submitted from the brand were incorporated 50% of the time in relevant product recommendations in AI Mode, providing shoppers with more precise and helpful answers.” That is 1 brand, in AI Mode, measuring how often the details were used. It is not a YouTube result and not a sales result.
What it means for you. Our read: an answer you never wrote down can't be quoted. If shoppers keep asking whether a jacket runs small, the feed is where that answer has to live.
Try this. Write answers to your 5 most common product questions, and add them to your product details in Merchant Center.
5. It can be wrong, and you own the answer
Date and source: September 2026. The terms on Google's beta sign-up form.
What we know. Google says so plainly: “Remember that Business Agent can make mistakes.” The same terms put responsibility on you: “You are solely responsible for the content that you provide to Business Agent and authorizing access or connection to your data, applications, or systems.” We found no way to block topics, approve answers or read the conversations in the sign-up form, the September 16 post, the Drop or the Search help page.
What it means for you. Our read: an old ship date or an expired promotion in your feed can become a promise in your ad, told to a shopper who is deciding whether to buy.
Try this. Remove expired promotions and old shipping dates from your feed before you opt in.
6. It answers. Your site takes the order.
Date and source: 2026. The beta form, and Google's help page for Business Agent on Search.
What we know. The form describes answering questions and sending shoppers on: “This bridges the gap between video inspiration and purchase confidence, delivering high-intent and more qualified traffic for merchants.” It says nothing about buying inside the ad. On Search, Google lists checkout as a future feature: “Performance insights and agentic checkout are also coming soon.”

What it means for you. Our read: the page a viewer lands on has to match what the agent just told them. If the chat says a size is in stock and your page says it isn't, you lose the sale and the trust.
Try this. Check that the price, sizes and shipping on your landing page match your feed.
7. No chat report yet. Test 1 campaign.
Date and source: 2026. Google's help page for Business Agent on Search, and the beta form.
What we know. Google hasn't said whether conversations inside the ads are reported anywhere. Its help page for Business Agent on Search lists performance insights as coming soon. That is not the “AI performance insights” report Google made generally available on September 16, which compares your brand's share of voice in AI Mode and AI Overviews. If you sign up, enrollment is broad by default: “By default, all eligible DG-GMC campaigns under your MCC ID will be enrolled.” The form lets you name specific campaigns instead.

What it means for you. Our read: without a comparison, you won't know whether the chat sold anything. And in the holiday season, a before-and-after comparison would give the chat credit for the seasonal lift.
Try this. On the form, list 1 campaign ID. Compare its sales with a similar campaign you left out, over the same weeks.
Before you opt in: 3 steps
- Clean up the feed. Fix sizes, prices and shipping dates, and remove expired promotions. Whatever is in the feed can end up in an answer.
- Write the answers down. Take the 5 questions your customers ask most and add the answers to your product details.
- Join small, and compare. List 1 campaign ID on the sign-up form, and judge it on sales against a similar campaign over the same weeks, not on clicks.
What Google has not said
Checked in the September 16 post, the sign-up form, the Drop and the Search help page, all re-read September 29, 2026.
Any result for Business Agent in YouTube ads. Google published no conversion, click or engagement number for it. The form says it delivers “high-intent and more qualified traffic”, with no figure. The lululemon number is about AI Mode, not YouTube.
That it reads your website in YouTube ads. The help page that mentions your website is about Search. For YouTube ads, the form, the Drop and the September 16 post never mention your website.
That checkout or reporting is coming to YouTube ads. The “coming soon” line is on the help page for Business Agent on Search. Google has said nothing about either for the YouTube beta.
That you can control what it says. On Search, Google documents a tone of voice, a welcome message, conversation starters, colors and a support contact. None of those is documented for YouTube ads, and we found no way to approve answers or read the chats.
When it opens to everyone. Google gave no date for wider availability and published no pricing for the feature.
That it is the same as Ask YouTube. YouTube announced shopping features for its own viewer AI, Ask YouTube, on September 23, 2026. That is a separate feature, not an ad product.
Sources: verified September 29, 2026 against Google's holiday shopping post of September 16, 2026, “Boost your holiday sales with these agentic commerce updates”, by Ashish Gupta; the Business Agent for YouTube Ads beta sign-up form and its terms; Google's help page “Get started with Business Agent”, which documents the Search version; and Google's Demand Gen Drop of September 24, 2026. Quotations are exact. Lines marked Our read are MichaelBennett.co's reasoning, not Google's.
